READ A MILLION WORDS!!!!
Tulsa Public Schools kicked off a new Reading Challenge this 2009-2010 School Year:
                     READ A MILLION WORDS!!!!

A Million words equals about 25 chapter books.  The students in the 3rd-5th grade have been challenged to read a million words.....and we need your help!

1.  PARENTS!!!   Any material that you read to the children counts.  Bedtime stories, Family Reading Fun...IT ALL COUNTS!!  Here is an online word calculator that will give you the approximate number of words to your read:  http://tinyurl.com/y8zgo4p.  Each child has a Reading Log in his/her notebook in the Library in which to record the number of words read.

2.    Of course, the daily Homework reading that your child does also counts!  Encourage the kids to be faithful to their homework and help make it fun.  You might actually see their brain grow larger and more powerful as the kids feed it with more and more new words and food for the imagination!  You will probably catch children reading with pleasant looks on their faces and fantastical ideas exploding out of their ears as they read!

3.  PARENTS AND KIDS!!!!!  We need suggestions on REALLY GREAT prizes to give to the students who actually become Million Word REaders!  How about a trip to Hawaii?  Mmmmm...the budget is a problem.....but seriously, great ideas are needed!  Please contact Laurie Smith with any/all inspirations for great prizes!  Thanks!
