Armstrong Newsletter with Archive

February 23rd, 2012

Dear Armstrong Parents,

The school board voted on Tuesday to move Mayo to the Wilson building beginning next year. We want you to know we are as excited and nervous as you are. We are looking over plans and working towards creating a new and unique building for Mayo.  Look for fun and exciting news in the weeks to come.

The Mayo Auction is NEXT WEEK!  Donations are rolling in.  Look for a flyer this week about a way that the students can participate.  We will be selling popcorn for snack on Friday, March 2.  All proceeds from the students will go to the auction.  Each bag will be 50¢.  We will make sure all children get a bag so if you would like to send $1.00 that would be great! We will also sell popcorn after school. Thanks for your support!

Wacky Wednesday will be Wednesday, February 29. Please look for a flyer in your home and back. On this day your child needs to wear a Mayo uniform but can “get wacky!” Some ideas are fun socks, funny hair, two different shoes, colorful shoelaces and jewelry.

Summer school at TPS will have a distinctly different vibe this year. From June 18 - July 13, 2012, TPS becomes a Teach For America (TFA) Summer Institute site. The program-offered by Tulsa Public Schools in partnership with TFA, Community Action Project (CAP) and The University of Tulsa- will provide a comprehensive academic program for over 3,000 children in Tulsa.  The free summer school will serve TPS children entering grades 1-12 in the 2012-13 school year, with nine different schools serving as host sites for the 2012 Teach For America Summer Institute.  For children entering grades 1-6 in the fall, the program will focus on meeting common core standards in mathematics and reading.  Elementary host sites include Hamilton, Hawthorne, Lewis & Clark, McClure, Robertson and Skelly.  Parents and students may pick up an application in person at school or at the Education Service Center at 3027 S. New Haven Ave., or online at www.tulsaschools.org - PARENTS - SUMMER PROGRAMS.

We have several students who are choosing not to eat lunch on a regular basis.  We know that occasionally students do not like the choice in the cafeteria for the day.  We would like you to go over the lunch menu which is sent home each month and help your student decide which would be good days to bring lunch and which would be good days to eat in the cafeteria.  Unless we have a written note from a parent each day, we will be sending students through the serving line and having them sit down with a meal in front of them.

Plan now to attend Student Led Conferences.  Mayo conferences will be Wednesday, March 14th from 2:45-5:45 p.m., or Thursday, March 15th from 3:45-6:45 p.m.  Remember, these are student driven and you should plan for 45 minutes or so.  If you would like to speak with a teacher about concerns or questions, please schedule a specific time.  There will be no school Friday, March 16th through Sunday March 25th for Spring Break.

We will also have students from an education class at OU visiting during conferences.  They may want to sit down and observe as you conference with your child.  If you have objections to this, please let us know.

We need your Mayo pictures for the yearbook. Please look for the flyer in your home and back for details. The website is picasa.google.com.

Curriculum Update

In Social Studies we continue to learn about events leading up to the Revolutionary War and the first battles of the war at Lexington and Concord.  This week in the Friday Folder, several items (French and Indian War booklet and assessment; Crispus Attucks gravestone paper) will be included.  PLEASE keep these items with the other Social Studies items contained in the red and blue construction paper folder that said to keep at home and/or study.

In Science we will begin looking at habitats and environments.  We look forward to having some kind of critter on our desks within a week or two.

In Mrs. Sander and Ms. Hartman's math classes, we are working on a BIG review packet of concepts we have covered so far this year.  We will start on the concept of probability next week.  Some of the vocabulary words we will be using are: most likely, least likely, equally likely, and outcome.

Ms. Power’s math class has been data analysis.  We have learned about different types of graphs and when to use them.
